Sports betting has become a common activity online. However there are still regulations made for online sports books that people need to follow. There are laws in the United States that determine the game's legality.
Previously regulations for gambling were to be made by the state's local government. However because of the advent of gambling via the internet the jurisdiction became a problem. All the bills were not successfully passed because enforcing the regulations would matter the most. For sports gambling however there is one regulation called the Wire Wager Act that has been effective. This law bans wiring money as a deposit policy of the website. The act is only applicable to betting on sports events because as stated it is only applied to participants in the wagering business like sports books.
In 2005 Antigua complained to the World Trade Organization against the United States banning many businesses that were previously established in the country. Antigua won the side of the World Trade Organization. In United Kingdom these days they are allowing sports books with operations in the islands near the country. The government of United Kingdom took a lenient stand on regulating the sports betting industry.
It is still important to consider the laws that are applicable to the state you are gambling on. Apparently there is no clear law made except in Nevada, California and Louisiana for online gambling on sports events.
